Brightspeed

Brightspeed

Fiber and DSL · 20–8,000 Mbps

Brightspeed took over the copper landline territory CenturyLink sold off in 2022 and has been overbuilding it with fiber since. Its fiber tiers run from 200 Mbps to 8 Gbps and are symmetrical up to the 2 Gig plan. The older DSL service is still sold at addresses fiber has not reached yet, at speeds well below what the fiber plans offer. No plan carries an annual contract or a data cap.

Brightspeed: common questions

Will I get fiber or DSL at my address?

That depends entirely on the street. Brightspeed is replacing copper with fiber market by market, so two homes in the same town can be offered different services. Enter your address before assuming a fiber tier is available.

Does Brightspeed require a contract?

No. Service is month to month and there is no early-termination fee if you cancel. Brightspeed does guarantee the monthly service rate for twelve consecutive months, excluding taxes and fees.

Is there a data cap?

No. Brightspeed states that its plans carry no data limits, on both fiber and DSL. There are no overage charges to watch for.

How much is the router?

Fiber plans include a Wi-Fi 7 router. Brightspeed's own offer terms also describe a $15 monthly modem lease on certain tiers, with a purchase option instead, so what you pay depends on which plan your address qualifies for.

Are the upload speeds the same as the download speeds?

On the 200 Mbps, 500 Mbps, 1 Gig and 2 Gig fiber plans, yes — Brightspeed lists them as equal. Upload figures for the 5 Gig and 8 Gig tiers are not published, and DSL uploads are far slower than downloads.

What does installation cost?

Brightspeed publishes a $99 installation fee on some tiers and no installation fee on the higher fiber plans. The amount is tied to the plan and the address, so confirm it at checkout.

Strengths and trade-offs

What they do well

  • Equal upload and download speeds on the 200 Mbps through 2 Gig fiber plans
  • No data caps and no annual contract on any plan
  • Wi-Fi 7 router included with fiber service
  • Monthly rate guaranteed for twelve consecutive months

Worth knowing

  • DSL addresses top out around 20 Mbps — a fraction of the slowest fiber tier
  • A $15 monthly modem lease applies on some tiers rather than all being free
  • Installation runs $99 on several plans
  • Advertised fiber pricing depends on paperless billing, and in some places autopay
  • The 5 Gig and 8 Gig tiers reach only a small part of the footprint

About this data: Coverage and speed figures come from the FCC National Broadband Map, as of December 2025, where providers self-report. Advertised speeds are maximums, not guarantees, and availability differs address by address. The FCC publishes no pricing at all, so every price here was taken from a rate the provider advertised publicly, last checked September 2026. Several providers quote only after an address check, and rates move constantly — treat these as a guide and confirm the figure for your own address before you order.
