Why availability is the first question, not price
Home internet is not a national market. It is tens of thousands of local ones. A provider advertising gigabit fiber across your metro may have run fibre down one side of your street and not the other, and the plan your neighbour raves about may simply not be orderable at your address.
That is why every comparison here starts with a ZIP code and narrows to an address. Comparing plans you cannot buy is the single biggest waste of time in shopping for internet, and it is the reason headline "best provider" lists are so often useless.
The five connection types, ranked
If more than one is available at your address, this is roughly the order to prefer them in.
1. Fiber
Light through glass. Symmetrical upload and download, very low latency, and unaffected by how many neighbours are online. If fiber is available and within budget, it is almost always the right answer.
2. Cable
The same coaxial line that carries cable TV. Download speeds rival fiber, but uploads are a fraction of them and speeds can dip in the evening when the local segment is busy.
3. 5G home internet
A cellular receiver in your window. No contracts, self-installed in minutes, often price-locked for years. Speeds swing with tower load and distance, so it suits light-to-moderate households.
4. DSL
Data over copper phone lines. Widely available and cheap, but speeds fall off sharply the further you live from the exchange. A fallback, not a first choice.
5. Satellite
Available almost anywhere, which is the point. Traditional satellite adds around half a second of delay; newer low-orbit services cut that dramatically but cost more upfront.

How much speed do you actually need?
Most households buy more speed than they use. Streaming is the heaviest everyday activity for the majority of homes, and even 4K video needs less than most people assume — the number that matters is how many things happen at once, not the headline figure on the box.

Add up the worst realistic moment in your week — two 4K streams, someone on a video call, a game console updating in the background — and you land somewhere near 100 Mbps for a busy family. Gigabit plans are rarely wasted money, but they are also rarely the difference between a good and bad experience. Upload speed and latency usually are.
What home internet really costs
Advertised prices are promotional, and the gap between the introductory rate and the standard rate is where most of the annoyance in this industry lives. Before you sign, work out the twelve-month and twenty-four-month total, not the first month.

- Buying your own modem and router usually pays for itself inside a year.
- Autopay and paperless billing discounts are real, and usually $5–$10 a month.

Start with your ZIP, then confirm at the street level. Two addresses on the same block can have different options.

Switching without paying twice
The most common mistake when changing provider is cancelling too early or too late. Cancel early and you lose service; cancel late and you pay two bills for a month. Order the new service first, get an installation date, and only then set your cancellation for the day after it is confirmed working.

If you live somewhere rural
Rural availability has changed more in the last five years than in the previous fifteen, largely through fixed wireless and low-earth-orbit satellite. It is worth rechecking your address annually even if the answer was disappointing last time — federal build-out funding means new lines are being lit continuously.
