What live TV streaming is
A live TV streaming service delivers a bundle of the same channels a cable package carries, over your existing internet connection, to an app on a television, phone or computer. There is no installer, no set-top box to rent, and generally no contract — you can start and stop month to month.
For most people it feels almost identical to cable to use: a channel guide, live channels, and cloud recording. The differences are commercial rather than technical.
What it costs once you add everything
| Item | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Base live TV package | $40 – $90 / mo | Prices have risen steadily toward cable |
| Sports add-on | $10 – $15 / mo | Regional networks where carried |
| Extra simultaneous streams | $5 – $15 / mo | Base plans often limit concurrent viewing |
| Premium channels | $10 – $20 / mo each | Same as cable |
| Equipment | $0 | The real saving — no box rental |
| Broadcast / regional sports fee | $0 | The other real saving |
The headline price is often not far below cable any more. Where streaming genuinely wins is the absence of equipment rental and broadcast fees, which on a cable bill commonly add $25 to $45 a month, and the absence of a contract.
The two gaps
The second gap is dependence on your internet connection. If your broadband goes down, so does television. On cable the two often fail together anyway, but on a shaky connection it is a real consideration — and every stream competes for bandwidth with everything else in the house.
Who it suits
Works well if
- Your internet is reliable and reasonably fast.
- You watch mostly national channels and on-demand.
- You want to stop and start without penalty.
- You watch on phones and tablets as much as on a television.
- You would rather not have an installer visit.
Cable may still be better if
- Your regional sports network is not carried.
- Local affiliates are missing in your market.
- Several people watch different channels at once.
- Your broadband is unreliable.
- A bundle makes the cable TV portion nearly free.
