How DSL works
DSL sends data over the copper telephone line already running to your house, using frequencies above those used by voice calls. That is why you can be on a DSL connection and a landline at the same time, and why DSL was available almost everywhere from the start — the wiring was already there.
The catch is distance. A DSL signal weakens the further it travels down copper, so your speed depends heavily on how far you are from the telephone exchange or street cabinet. Two houses on the same plan a mile apart can get genuinely different speeds, and neither is a fault to be fixed.

Uploads on DSL are typically a small fraction of the download speed, often between 1 and 20 Mbps. On slower lines this is what makes video calls difficult, more so than the download figure.
DSL is being retired
Several major carriers have stopped selling DSL to new customers and are progressively decommissioning copper as they replace it with fiber. If you are on DSL today, at some point you will receive notice that the service is ending in your area.
If DSL is your only wired option
- 1 Check fixed wireless from local providers — often overlooked and frequently faster than DSL.
- 2 Check 5G home internet, which now covers a lot of areas that only ever had DSL.
- 3 Check low-earth-orbit satellite if you are genuinely remote and need video calls to work.
- 4 Ask your electric cooperative whether it is building fiber; many are.
- 5 Recheck every six to twelve months. Rural availability is changing faster than at any point in the last twenty years.
In the meantime, small things help disproportionately on a slow line: connecting the main computer by ethernet, limiting background updates to overnight, and lowering streaming quality by one step so a video call is not competing with 4K.
