What speeds will I actually get from Viasat?
Viasat quotes service speeds of up to 25 to 150 Mbps and says the range depends on the area. The tier offered to you is determined by your address and by how much satellite capacity covers it, so check availability before assuming a figure.
Does Viasat have a data cap?
Essentials includes 150 GB of high-speed data each month, after which you keep unlimited standard data at lower priority. Unleashed has no fixed cap, but Viasat says customers trending above 850 GB in a 30-day period may see reduced priority when the network is busy.
Is a contract required?
Unleashed has no minimum service term, so you can cancel without an early-termination charge. Essentials is sold on a 12-month term, and cancelling early carries a fee for the remaining months.
Why does satellite internet feel slower than its speed rating?
Viasat uses satellites in geostationary orbit, and every request travels roughly 22,000 miles up and the same distance back. That round trip adds delay that a speed test does not capture, and it is noticeable in video calls, online gaming and anything else that depends on quick responses.
Does weather affect the service?
Yes. Heavy rain, dense cloud and snow accumulating on the dish can weaken or briefly interrupt the signal, and the effect varies with the severity of the storm.
What does the equipment cost?
The dish and modem are leased rather than purchased, at $15 per month. Installation is carried out by a technician, and Viasat states that a one-time standard installation fee may be charged at the time of sale.
